Attorney Calvin P. Johnson

Calvin Johnson began his law firm on May 12, 1980, three days after he was sworn in as an attorney in the State of Minnesota. He specializes in practicing criminal defense, exclusively. He is a member of the Minnesota Bar Association and National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. He has tried numerous cases and contested Pre-Trial hearings. He is a strong advocate for the accused. He is the former Chief Public Defender of the Fifth Judicial District, comprising 15 counties, extending from Nicollet County, south to the Iowa border, and west to the South Dakota border. He started the first full-time public defender office in out-state Minnesota.

He has handled murder, criminal sexual conduct, theft, embezzlement, drug cases, DWI/DUI's, welfare fraud, computer fraud, white collar crime, motor vehicle forfeitures, license plate forfeiture, and practically every kind of criminal case imaginable. Search and seizure, unlawful arrests and suppression of evidence, including the results of alcohol tests, comprise a large portion of his practice.

He has worked extensively with the judges and prosecutors of this area. He takes significant time developing relationships that enable open communication and forthrightness in his negotiations.

He urges extensive consideration for his clients in understanding their case. He wants you to feel safe and secure, and to understand the system. He wants his client to understand all available options, and to take responsibility for the direction of their case. He strongly urges the client to consider all of the ramifications of his/her actions, and to address those situations that can be corrected.

He is a strong proponent of freedom of choice in health care, and worked for 6 years on the famous milk-farmer case, involving fraud and practicing medicine without a license.
